Anyone have a recommendation on a bench mounted magnifying lamp with the flexible arm? For some reason the ol hand held lens that use to stay in the drawer is always on the bench now.....

Forget the magnifying lamp and just pick up a good magnifying visor.
Trust me, when working with the tools, reading glasses have become a must for me, and there are times when even they don't cut it, and my magnifying visor at thrown on as well (over the top of the glasses). I keep the lens on the high side so I can tilt me head every down for ultra fine work, then just tilt me head up to look threw the reading glasses for most of the other work. and I need to see regularl (such as across the room), then just look under the bottom of the reading glass frames for that. With a magnifying lamp, then you almost need a third hand to adjust it when trying to work on something below it (read short of dancing in your chair to get the right view through it)
As for a set, the ones I have have a padded strap, back knob strap adjustment, and even glass lens that I picked up at hobby lobby. There are not in front of me, but if you search around, should be able to find the same type set for under $30.

Appreciate the input, hadn't thought about visors. Good points.

But good lighting is a must too. I might have to check them out too. Any good ones?

+1 for the magnifying visor. I bought mine at http://www.micromark.com/lights-and-magnifiers.html. They have various degrees of magnification available. I'm sure there are other companies selling similar products. The visor is also good for digging slivers out of your fingers!
