I have acquired a bag of nickel plated shot (#5) and want to use it in pheasant handloads. I have Fiocchi straight-walled hulls (more volume than the Rems I usually load) and a variety of wads to play with. I just need to try a powder or two that I have little experience with. Up until now, most of my hunting loads were made with Longshot. Now I need a "bulkier" powder to take up some space in the hull for nice crimps. I don't want to mess with "filler cards" if at all possible. I have done a little loading with Herco and Unique, but none of the equivalent Hodgdon powders.

Any suggestions/opinions on a good powder for 1.25oz 12ga loads in high-volume hulls?

I did a search before this post and saw an interesting post about Herco being a very consistent/quality propellant.

I appreciate any help/experiences/opinions.

How about a longer wad?

I already use the long WAA12114 yellow wad in these hulls. I have used them for 1 3/8oz loads with longshot.

Reducing my payload to 1 1/4oz means either more Longshot which I don't want, or another powder.

I do have RemSP12 or RP12...I forget which.

I use Blue Dot for all my game loads but I sure couldn't give you bulk/volumn info on that powder compared to longshot. I really don't think that the powder will give you enough variation to fix your problem.

A good place to start is right here:

Is Herco not doing something for you that you want done?

I've loaded more Herco than anything else for 1-1/4 oz. loads; #2 would be WSF in AA or STS hulls.

Randy, I just have very little experience using Herco...I used some left-overs from a friend a long time ago. The Alliant site lists Herco for several 1.25oz loads, but I was just hoping someone would verify its effectiveness. Your post did that.

Texas Ton, I can't find any listings for those powders using a Fiocchi hull and 1.25oz of shot.

I am quite familiar with the Hodgdon site and use it a lot for my longshot loads, but again have never used anything other than longshot or international. I appreciate the replies and help.

Alliant's website list the following;

Fiocchi 2 3/4 target hull
Win 209
WAA12F114
38.5grs Bluedot
1 1/4oz shot

1300fps and 8300 psi

Haven't tried this myself but loaded a lot of hunting loads with Bluedot and AA hulls and it works very well.

Herco! Everything else is second best!

I wonder how many roosters I popped over the years with a load of 29 gr of Herco in an AA with a Pacific Blue Verilite wad and 1-1/4 oz of #5 Lawrence Chill? It'd be a lot of them. I can't imagine a better powder. Might be one, but I don't know what it could be!

Also,
The F114 wad and the rem wads aren't the best wads
to use in the fiocchi hull.
Get some Federal S4 wads.
1 1/4 oz
Fio. 616 primer
30.0 Herco
Fed. 12S4
1300fps
9,500 psi

I use WSF in my 1 1/4-oz. field loads with AA or Fiocchi purple hulls and the WWAA12114 wads.

Good shooting,

The AA wad is not the best choice for use in the Fiocchi hull. Ultramag's suggestion of the Federal wad is the best generally available wad for that hull application. Measure the inside of the Fiocchi hull right about where it sits in the loaded hull and then measure the overpowder cup dia of the AA wad. The poor fit becomes obvious!
