Don't throw every Mossberg under the bus just because you had a jamming issue with yours. Sometimes you just get a sketchy one, man. Did you try to get it repaired under warranty or just write it off and start telling everyone who would listen that it was junk? I have a friend who got a new 870 and it choked on every second or third round for about 1200 rounds. Turned out the barrel just needed polished. The tolerance was too tight and the shells were hanging up. Now it's fixed and works fine. You don't hear me going around saying all 870's are junk. I bet if you had gotten a Remi first and it had jammed like his did you would have unloaded it and would be in here talking sh*t about Remis...

I owned a Mossberg 500 Crown Grade for only twenty years before it... wait, it NEVER jammed. NEVER. Great gun, a tad heavy, but a great gun. I sold it to my uncle when I decided to get a sxs.
These guns throw pellets out the open end of a long metal cylinder. Pick up a few guns, get a feel for the one you like, get it, spend whatever money you think it's worth, and enjoy the heck out of it. Go kill things and feed your family. Knock little clay discs out of the sky. And remember how much fun you are having per dollar, and rarely remember the guys who've bought a gun so that other people can look at it and say, "pretty gun!" I'm not saying that everyone who buys an expensive gun does it to impress the Joneses, but many do. How many of them can pull up in a brand new Hummer or Range Rover and pull out a Mossberg 500? Verily somebody says unto them, they have their reward.
Me? I'll take my reward when I bring home a rabbit that my family thinks tastes great!

I'll put in another good word for Mossberg customer service. I bought my 500 with a 28" barrel about 3 weeks ago, and before firing it decided I'd prefer to have the 20" barrel that they sell separately. I called Mossberg up and they didn't even hesitate to say send the long barrel in and they'll ship out the short one. They just lost a $150 sale but made a customer for life. How many other companies would do that?

Another good word for Mossberg. I bought a used M590A1 and it works flawlessly. I was very nervous about laying down 350$ for a used gun but it didn't dissapoint. wonderful gun.
I plan on getting an 870 also...

I have owned a mossberg for 25 years (mod 500 20ga) its always worked flawlessly. My buddy still hunts with the one his dad shortened the stock on and kept pieces to add back as he grew....we are both 42 now. Both our 500's have been to heck and back and work great.
Not the prettiest or nicest shotguns out there but very adequate.
I wouldnt own a Remington product....I bet they have had more recalls and flat out dangerous problems than any other maker out there.....and if you buy one you might be calling Mc Donalds in a decade for customer service.....they have been passed around (bought and sold) so many times I cant nor do I want to keep up. Their most recent full recall (return guns for a measly sum to compensate owners) of Rem 597 .17 cal is just their latest screw up.

145 replys and 95,433 views on this topic so far. I'd say it really woke up the Mossberg users, and yes, I have 3 in the cabinet. If they were junk they would not be there.

After recently acquiring my gun license, and reading reviews on this site and others I decided to pick up a Mossberg 590A1 (20 inch barrel and GRS). This was about a month ago, and to date I have put about 400 rounds through it. I am yet to encounter a single problem with this shotgun (not a single jam, or failure to eject). My luck with Remingtons however has been less than stellar. This does not mean that I will not buy any Remingtons in the future, just that I will look closer at them before I do. Next I plan on buying a Benelli Supernova, but I will always keep my Mossberg.

johntarney, the 935 doesn't usually like light loads. I think you would have no problem with heavier loads. It is designed for heavy loads.

I got a 500 back in '91 that was over 10 years old at the time. I hunted with it until 2000 and gave it to my son. He shoots it more than I did and it has never given either of us the first problem. Great gun. I bought a 870 Express Super Mag in 2000 and used it for everything until 2005 and made a turkey gun out of it. Completely reliable, but not as smooth as the 500. Of course, the Mossberg being pumped several thousand times more might have something to do with it. In 2007 I bought a Mossberg 930 and couldn't be happier with it. I hunt and fire several rounds of trap during the summer to knock the rust off. If I shot clays seriously I would have a more expensive gun. But for what I do my 930 more than fills the bill. I know this thread has been raised from the dead, but I couldn't help but add my .02.

If you want straight, down to business shotgun, you cannot beat the simple bang you get from the 930 SPX semi-auto ,7+1 with the pistol grip and ghost ring sight. Just happen to have one NIB. You'll love it for turkey, birds, animals, and self-defense.

Sometimes you will get a lemon with a 870 Express or a Mossberg 500.

Spoonbill, That can happen with any grade of any brand of shotgun. That's why there are warranties.

I don't know if you have checked the quality of the 870's lately but i think you'll find that they are lacking from what they produced years ago. I think you could buy a Mossberg ( comes with a 10 year warrantee) and not ever wear it out. I have had numerous model 500's in all gauges. They always ended up being sold to someone else, thay never ever had to be repaired nor did thay wear out. Admittedly they will never win a beauty contest , but they are one of the least inexpensive ways to get out and enjoy the sport we all love...hunting/ shooting.
