I ignored the warnings and bought a Surefire forend (623LF) for my Mossberg 590.

Of course, it doesn't fit with the bayonet lug.

My question is this...do I absolutely need to grind off the bayonet lug? Instead, could the whole piece (see photo) be removed from the barrel?

I'd rather not do a grind job on the lug and then have to re-Parkerize the whole barrel. I know this has been discussed here before, but any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated.

From what I understand you can get the LED head for the weapon light (vice the incan head) and not make a mod to the shotgun. The LED head is supposed to be narrow enough to clear it. You might still need to unscrew the sling stud from the back of the lug though.

The head I have is the LED. It misses clearing by about 1/4".

Well that stinks. I had been told that the LED head would work with the 590 as it was smaller in diameter.
You may have to grind the lug off then. It is part of the barrel and won't come off.

I ground mine off, as I didn't see the need for a bayo lug.
