I'm shooting in the turkey shoot the 15-17 and thinkin about shooting some sub gauges but have never done it in a registered shoot. Will I shoot in my normal 12 gauge class or still be in D for those gauges?
Yup! just don't change while in the stand.
Actually you can shoot any lower gauge gun in a higher gauge event.
I shot a 28 gauge in 12 gauge events in the past.
Yes. You can even shoot your 20, 28 or 410 in the 12 event if you want, as long as you din't exceed 1-1/8th oz shot. Likewise, you can shoot a 28 in the 20 and 28 side events.

There is an explicit rule covering the maximum shot charge per gauge and the overall length of the shell. One of the local ranges had a supply of 1 oz twenty ***** shells which are not allowed in a registered 'open' event. 3 inch 410 shells are also a problem. Nobody checks and it's surprising that no one ever hears about disqualified shooters.
b. Maximum loads for any gauge event may not exceed:
Gauge Ounce Lead
12 1 1/8
20 7/8
28 3/4
.410 (2 1/2" Maximum) 1/2
Welllll, I can only find a rule that sets a absolute shot limit per gauge. I would appreciate learning something new, please cite the rule that allows a 1oz twenty gauge load. thanks,
rs.
Page 30 of the current rule book, Para. b at the top of the page. If it is a 12 gauge event, the max load is 1 1/8 oz. If it is a 20 gauge event, it is 7/8 oz. So, if you could stuff 1 1/8 ounce load in a 28 gauge and shoot it in a 12 gauge event, it would be legal.
C. GAUGE SPECIFICATIONS
1. Twelve gauge events shall be open to all shotguns of 12
gauge or smaller, using shot loads not exceeding one and
one-eighth (1 1/8) ounces.
2. Twenty gauge events shall be open to all shotguns of 20
gauge or smaller, using shot loads not exceeding seven27
eights (7/8) of an ounce.
3. Twenty-eight gauge events shall be open to all shotguns of
28 gauge or smaller, using shot loads not exceeding threequarters
(3/4) of an ounce.
4. Four-ten events shall be open to all shotguns of .410 bore,
using shot loads not exceeding one-half (1/2) of an ounce.
Your rule was for the "gauge-specific" events on page 29:
b. Maximum loads for any gauge event may not exceed:
Gauge Ounce Lead
12 1 1/8
20 7/8
28 3/4
.410 (2 1/2" Maximum) 1/2
Your rule is essentially stating the max limit per gauge event ie; any 12 ga event cannot use more than 1-1/8th oz shot, but you can most definitely use 1-1/8th in a 20, 28 or 410 if you can fit it in the hull
I have to disagree since the gauge/load limits are pretty much "black 'n white" the way I read it.
I also went back to the rule book and located the same clauses. And, I checked several catalogues looking for 1 oz 20 gauge loads: add Win AA HEAVY TARGET to the list. Fiocchi is not a surprise since it is a European company with greater FITASC presence.
The gauge specification clauses creates a scenario that concievably allows a illegal 20 gauge load to be acceptable in a 12 gauge event. The same gap could theoretically exist between 20 and 28, 28 and 410. The 'B' clause follows in the book and eliminates that gap! Illegal load for NSCA Sporting BUT permitted in FITASC since those rules do not specify gauge limts, just a 1 oz max load.
I emailed the question to the NSCA. I hate it when I'm wrong, which ialmost as much as 'fuzzy' language in the rules!! The NSCA response is as follows...
"I asked Brett Moyes, NSCA Director, to address your question. His response:
As long as you do not shoot something larger than what is allowed in a specific event, you can shoot that size. For example, a 1 oz. load in a 20 gauge will be acceptable to shoot in a 12 gauge event."

I have no animosity towards anyone for their beliefs. I think I've demonstrated an ability to listen and objectively question my own ideas. Had the NSCA agreed with my understanding, the posted response would still be appropriate as written. rs.
